Cadgwith Cove is a small, traditional Cornish fishing village on the eastern Lizard Peninsular, sitting in a valley leading down to the sea, with whitewashed and thatched cottages in evidence. Apart from the summer tourism, its principle source of income is still the sea, with small fishing boats that launch, as they have for centuries from the exposed shingle beach, when the weather allows, in search of crab, lobster and mackerel. I was attracted to this compact and busy composition and its complex tangle of detail, with the fishing boats hauled up hard against the land away from the breaking waves of the sea.
